Google introduces Motion Assist to reduce Android motion sickness

Google is expanding access to Motion Assist, a new Android feature designed to reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. The function, appearing in Google Play Services updates and Android 17, addresses the sensory conflict that occurs when eyes focus on a static screen while the body perceives movement.

Motion Assist works by overlaying discrete, moving graphic elements—such as dots, circles, squares, or diamonds—along the edges of the screen. These elements move in synchronization with the vehicle's motion, providing visual cues to the brain to mitigate discomfort. Users can customize the experience by selecting from five different colors, various geometric shapes, and adjusting opacity levels.

While similar technology exists on Apple devices, Google’s implementation is intended as an accessibility aid for passengers in cars, buses, or trains. It is not a medical cure and is most effective when activated before symptoms begin. The feature is designed to allow users to continue tasks like reading or messaging with less physical discomfort.
