Google introduces native document backup and granular controls for Android

Google has updated Android via Google Play Services (version 26.25) to add a native tool that automatically backs up local documents—such as PDF, DOC, PPT and XLS files—to the user's Google Drive. When enabled, the system creates a folder named after the device, stores the files as a one‑way copy, and encrypts the transfer. Edits made on the phone are not synced back to the cloud, and files remain in Drive even if the feature is later disabled.

In the same update, Google gave users finer control over other backup categories. Call logs, device settings, and SMS/MMS/RCS messages can now be toggled individually rather than being saved as a single block. These backups count toward the storage quota of each Google account, allowing users to select only the data they consider essential. A public release date has not been announced, but the changes are expected to arrive soon for the most widely used mobile operating system.
