Google launches Playground AI platform for text-based game creation

Google has launched Playground, an experimental AI-powered platform that enables users to create playable video games using simple text prompts. The tool, part of Google Labs, requires no programming or drawing knowledge, allowing creators to build 2D or 3D games through a conversational interface. The platform utilizes advanced AI models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria, to interpret instructions and adjust game physics, mechanics, and visuals.

Users can start from scratch, use templates, or provide reference images to guide the visual style. Once a game is generated, it can be played directly in a web browser on computers or mobile devices. Creators can keep their projects private, share them via links, or publish them to the Playground Explore community gallery. The platform also supports multiplayer modes and leaderboards through integration with Google Play Games profiles.

To expand the platform's capabilities, Google is partnering with Unity. A planned integration with Unity Spark aims to provide more sophisticated 3D environments and professional-grade mechanical flexibility by utilizing the Unity Asset Store. Currently, the experimental service is available to adults aged 18 and older in the United States, with access levels potentially tied to Google One subscriptions.
