Google introduces Tap to Share feature for Android Quick Share

Google has begun rolling out a new “Tap to Share” feature for its Quick Share system on Android devices. This update allows compatible phones to initiate the sharing of contacts, photos, videos, links, and locations by simply bringing the devices close together.

The feature utilizes NFC to detect nearby compatible phones. For the connection to work, both devices must have unlocked screens with the displays facing upward. When the devices recognize each other, a glow animation appears to signal the start of the sharing process. While contact sharing can be initiated directly from the home screen, sharing other media files requires using the Android Share Sheet before bringing the devices together.

The rollout has started with Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 17. Support is expected to expand to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Flip8, and Ultra models soon, with broader Android compatibility planned before the end of 2026. The feature is enabled by default on supported devices, though it is unavailable for devices using managed accounts or Work profiles.
