Google introduces Tap to Share feature for Android devices

Google has officially introduced ‘Tap to Share’, a new feature integrated into the Quick Share protocol that allows Android users to exchange data by physically bringing two devices together. The feature utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) to initiate a handshake, while the actual transfer of large files, such as photos and videos, is handled via Wi-Fi Direct to ensure high-speed, lossless transmission.

When used from the home screen, the feature facilitates the exchange of contact cards. To share specific media or files, users must first open the content and select the share option before tapping the devices together. This functionality is designed to provide a more intuitive experience similar to Apple’s NameDrop and AirDrop.

The rollout has begun with Google Pixel 6 and newer models. Samsung Galaxy devices, specifically the Z Fold 8 Ultra, Z Fold 8, and Z Flip 8, are expected to receive the update shortly. Google plans to expand support to a wider range of Android 17-compatible devices by the end of the year.
