Google invests $50 M in US AI workforce training as student enrollments shift

Google announced a $50 million investment to fund training programs for technical workers needed to build and maintain AI data‑center infrastructure across more than 20 U.S. states. The initiative targets electricians, plumbers, welders, maintenance technicians and other essential trades, aiming to address a projected labor shortage as artificial‑intelligence projects expand.

A separate analysis by Goldman Sachs shows U.S. recent graduates are increasingly concerned that AI could replace entry‑level office jobs. The study found higher substitution risk for majors such as computer science, statistics and related fields, while health‑care and education majors face the lowest risk. As a result, enrollment in computer‑science programs fell by over 10 percent, whereas health‑related and engineering programmes saw modest gains, indicating students are adjusting their academic choices in response to perceived AI disruption.
