Google AI Overviews launch in France sparks press backlash, Alphabet stock dip
On 22 July 2026 Google deployed its new AI Overviews and AI Mode features in France, placing AI‑generated summaries at the top of search results. The French Syndicat des éditeurs de la presse magazine (SEPM) condemned the roll‑out, saying Google acted without consultation and breached commitments made to the French competition authority. The syndicate warned that the shortcuts could divert traffic from publishers, questioned the opt‑out mechanism and the remuneration model, and called for regulatory scrutiny.
Alphabet reported strong Q2 2026 earnings, with revenue up 24 % to $119.8 billion and record growth in Google Cloud. Nevertheless, the company’s share price fell 6 % after the results, as investors expressed concern over heavy AI‑related capital spending, a negative cash‑flow of $5.9 billion for the quarter, and delays within Google DeepMind’s Gemini models. The combination of the AI Overviews launch and mounting AI investment pressures highlights growing tension between the tech giant’s search strategy, media publishers, and market expectations.
