Google launches AI Overviews and AI Mode in France, sparking media concerns

On 22‑23 July 2026 Google deployed its new AI Overviews and AI Mode features in the French version of its search engine. The AI Overviews appear as a synthesized answer at the top of the results page, followed by links to the original sources, while AI Mode offers a conversational interface for complex queries.

The change alters the traditional search experience and SEO dynamics, with early data from markets where the feature is active indicating a 20‑40 % drop in traffic for publishers. French media organisations, represented by the Syndicat des éditeurs de la presse magazine (SEPM), allege that Google introduced the features without prior consultation, violating commitments made to the French Competition Authority. SEPM argues that Google now competes directly with publishers by using their content to generate the AI answers.

Google had previously concluded agreements with about 450 French news outlets on neighboring‑rights remuneration. The Competition Authority fined the company €250 million in March 2024 for breaching those commitments. The rollout has also prompted discussions about the impact on media revenue, the need for opt‑out mechanisms, and ways for users to disable the AI Overviews.
