Google launches Android 17 with AI, gaming and multitasking upgrades
Google rolled out Android 17 in mid‑June 2026, beginning with Pixel smartphones as part of the June Pixel Drop. The update, sized around 1.5 GB, introduces a suite of new features aimed at productivity, creativity and security.
Key multitasking tools include system‑wide Bubbles that let any app run in a floating window and a dedicated Bubble Bar for large screens and foldables. Screen Reactions embed a front‑camera video feed while recording the screen, simplifying reaction‑style content creation.
AI is deeper in the OS: a local "Neural Core" runs Gemini‑powered models on‑device for predictive text, photo editing and context‑aware battery management, while the new AppFunctions/MCP framework lets AI agents invoke third‑party app capabilities. A "Verified Vault" hardware‑backed encryption layer protects clipboard and sensitive permissions.
Gaming receives a dedicated Foldable Gaming Mode and an "Apex Gaming Engine" that stabilises frame rates and reduces CPU spikes. Controller mapping is native and a split‑screen layout places the game on the upper half of the display with a dynamic virtual gamepad below.
Security upgrades add biometric‑required "Mark as lost" protection, temporary precise‑location permissions, selective contact sharing and stricter PIN‑retry limits. Developers also gain a Rust‑based ADB‑Wi‑Fi 2.0 for more reliable wireless debugging.
Android Switch is rebuilt into the OS, expanding iPhone‑to‑Android migration to include Google accounts, iMessage history, eSIM profiles and app data without needing a separate app. The rollout will expand to Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other OEMs later in 2026.
