Google rolls out Android 17 with AI features, bubbles multitasking and security upgrades

Google released Android 17 on 16 June, initially for compatible Pixel smartphones and later for other Android devices through 2026. The update emphasizes artificial‑intelligence integration via Gemini Intelligence, new multitasking tools such as App Bubbles and a Bubble Bar, Screen Reactions that capture front‑camera video while recording the screen, and a foldable‑gaming mode that splits the display for game play and virtual controls. Security and privacy were expanded with temporary precise‑location permissions, selective contacts sharing, enhanced Find‑Hub remote lock, stricter PIN‑attempt limits and broader malware detection.

Early adopters reported a Wi‑Fi bug on some Pixel phones where apps such as YouTube, Gmail, Play Store and Google Photos fail to load while connected to Wi‑Fi, but work normally on mobile data. Work‑arounds include disabling IPv6 or resetting network settings, and Google may issue a corrective update.

Google also opened the Android 17 source code via the Android Open Source Project and introduced developer‑focused features like AppFunctions, which expose app capabilities to AI agents, stricter memory limits, post‑quantum cryptography support and new privacy APIs. A device‑eligibility roadmap shows Pixel 6‑series and newer, Samsung Galaxy S‑ and Z‑series, OnePlus 11‑13, Xiaomi flagship lines and other recent premium phones as likely recipients.
