Google launches Android Developer Verification in select markets
Google has launched the first operational phase of Android Developer Verification, a system designed to verify the identity of developers even when applications are distributed through third-party stores or via sideloaded APK files. The initiative aims to curb the spread of malicious software by preventing anonymous actors from distributing unverified apps.
The initial rollout is limited to Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. This phase allows Google to collect data and test the system alongside participating stores before a planned global expansion in 2027. The verification process works at the system level, meaning it affects certified Android devices regardless of whether the software comes from the Play Store.
In Russia, officials have expressed concern that these new security measures could effectively block local applications. Russian Digitalization Minister Maksut Shadaev noted that the requirement for developers to prove their identity and register applications could hinder the ability of users to install local software, potentially creating significant obstacles for Russian programmers and users seeking unverified or independent mobile applications.
