Google launches August 2026 spam update globally
Google has launched its August 2026 spam update, marking the third such update of the year following releases in March and June. The update is being deployed globally and affects all languages.
According to Google's Search Status Dashboard, the rollout is expected to take several days. The update aims to improve automated systems, such as the AI-based SpamBrain, to better identify and penalize content designed to manipulate search rankings. This includes targeting practices like mass-generated automated content, low-quality or duplicate material, and doorway abuse, where similar location-based pages are used to funnel traffic.
John Mueller of Google Search Relations clarified that the company does not delay official announcements; rather, announcements are timed to coincide with the start of a rollout. He noted that any ranking fluctuations observed prior to the official notice are likely due to routine index shifts rather than a stealth deployment of the update.
