Google launches Gmail program for political email senders

Google has announced the Gmail Verified Sender Program, a new initiative scheduled to launch on September 8 that allows US political committees to bypass standard spam filters. The program is available to 527 tax-exempt candidates, political parties, PACs, and other political committees.

To qualify, entities must verify their sending domain through Campaign Verify and utilize Google’s Postmaster Tools to monitor operations. A strict requirement for participation is maintaining a spam rate below 0.3% over a 14-day average. Failure to comply can result in a seven-day suspension or permanent termination from the program, after which the sender will be subject to standard Gmail spam filters.

The policy shift has drawn mixed reactions. Some Democratic strategists expressed concern that the program creates a ‘V.I.P. lane’ for campaigns that could lead to an influx of unwanted political spam for users. Conversely, other observers noted the potential impact on fundraising, citing that certain Democratic groups have historically raised more online than their Republican counterparts.

This development follows previous scrutiny regarding political email outreach, including a 2022 pilot program approved by the Federal Election Commission and past legal challenges from Republican groups regarding alleged email suppression.
