Google launches Health Guardian for Pixel Watch

Google is rolling out its ‘Health Guardian’ feature set to Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 users. The update introduces new capabilities for tracking blood pressure trends and insulin resistance through wearable sensors.

The insulin resistance feature uses heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), and activity patterns to estimate metabolic status. This analysis is powered by a large-scale sensor model trained on data from over 5 million volunteers. While insulin resistance is typically measured via bloodwork, Google’s algorithm aims to provide users with long-term trends. Users can expect insulin resistance reports as early as October, while blood pressure trend reports will be available once sufficient data is accumulated.

Access to these features varies by device. Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 users can access the service for free via the health app. However, Fitbit Air users will require a Google Health Premium subscription to utilize these specific tracking features later this year. Google emphasizes that these tools are intended for daily health management and are not medical devices, pre-screeners, or diagnostic tools for conditions like diabetes.
