Google launches Playground AI platform for text-to-game creation

Google has launched Playground, an experimental AI-powered platform that allows users to create, play, and share video games using natural language prompts. Operating directly in web browsers, the tool enables users to build 2D or 3D games without any coding or traditional game engine knowledge. Users can describe game mechanics, rules, characters, and environments through a chat-style interface, iteratively refining their creations with follow-up instructions.

Playground is currently available to users in the United States aged 18 and older. The platform utilizes a combination of Google’s AI models, including Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria. While basic creation features are free, Google One subscribers will receive additional weekly tokens for increased usage.

To expand the platform’s capabilities, Google has announced a strategic partnership with Unity. The companies plan to integrate Unity Spark, a tool designed to bring professional-grade mechanics, high-fidelity 3D graphics, and access to the Unity Asset Store to the Playground environment. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg noted that the tool is intended to serve as a starting point for developers rather than a replacement for human creativity.

Following the announcement, Roblox shares experienced a decline of up to 8% in pre-market trading, reflecting industry concerns regarding the impact of generative AI on established game creation ecosystems.
