Google launches Project Suncatcher AI chip prototype into orbit

Google has launched its first experimental satellite for Project Suncatcher, a research initiative aimed at testing artificial intelligence hardware in space. The refrigerator-sized prototype, developed in partnership with Planet Labs, was deployed into low Earth orbit via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket during the Transporter-18 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The satellite carries four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to evaluate how specialized AI chips perform under extreme orbital conditions, including high radiation, vacuum cooling requirements, and intense thermal fluctuations. Engineers intend to use the collected data to identify points of failure related to launch vibrations and radiation resistance to improve future chip designs.

Project Suncatcher explores the long-term feasibility of hosting scalable AI computing infrastructure in low Earth orbit. One primary advantage being investigated is the ability to leverage near-constant sunlight, which could potentially generate up to eight times more solar energy than equivalent systems on Earth. Future phases of the project may include testing high-capacity laser communication between satellite clusters to process larger AI workloads in space.
