Google launches Project Suncatcher prototype to test AI chips in orbit

Google has successfully launched the first prototype satellite for Project Suncatcher, an initiative aimed at exploring the feasibility of orbital AI data centers. The satellite, built in collaboration with Planet Labs, was deployed via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on the Transporter-18 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

The refrigerator-sized spacecraft carries four of Google’s Trillium Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The mission serves as a critical test to determine how specialized AI hardware performs under the extreme conditions of low Earth orbit, including intense radiation, significant temperature fluctuations, and the physical stresses of launch.

To manage heat in the vacuum of space, the satellite will run AI workloads, including a version of Google’s Gemma model, in approximately 15-minute intervals. This project seeks to leverage the nearly continuous sunlight available in orbit, which could potentially provide up to eight times more solar energy than ground-based systems, offering a solution to the growing energy demands of terrestrial AI infrastructure.
