Google launches Redact tool to hide sensitive data in photos

Google is testing a new feature called Redact that lets users quickly conceal sensitive information—such as license plates, faces, documents, and screen content—directly on photos before sharing. The tool works locally on the device, so images are not uploaded to Google’s servers. Redact was discovered in the code of Google Photos version 7.85.0.9505 and appears in the markup toolbar alongside existing editing tools like the pen and highlighter. It uses image‑recognition algorithms to suggest elements for blurring and may offer options such as pixelation. The feature aims to simplify privacy protection for everyday users and position Google against competing photo‑editing apps that already provide manual redaction options.

Reports from Poland and Slovakia note that Redact could be rolled out to services such as Google Photos and Google Messages, giving users more control over what personal data leaves their devices.
