Google Gemini gains voice‑control shortcut on macOS
Google has released an update to its Gemini app for macOS that lets users activate the assistant by long‑pressing the Fn key. The default mode provides intelligent dictation that automatically removes filler words such as “um” and “ah”, corrects mid‑sentence changes, and inserts clean, formatted text directly at the cursor in any open window. An optional screen‑aware reasoning mode can be enabled, allowing Gemini to read the content displayed on the screen – including documents, PDFs, images and other files – and carry out commands such as summarising, rewriting, drafting emails or generating and editing images. The rollout began on July 29‑30 2026, initially for all English‑language users of the Gemini macOS app worldwide, with additional languages planned. Google says the feature is intended to embed a conversational AI directly into the desktop workflow, positioning Gemini as a direct competitor to Apple Intelligence and other on‑device assistants.
