Google Maps adds speedometer display for Android Auto and expands radar‑warning use in Europe

Google Maps has begun rolling out a GPS‑based speedometer (tachometer) display for Android Auto users, showing the vehicle’s current speed next to the posted speed limit. The feature was already available on smartphones and Apple CarPlay, but Android Auto lacked it until this gradual, unannounced rollout.

The app also offers radar‑warning alerts in many countries, but German law (StVO § 23 Abs. 1c) prohibits the use of devices that indicate traffic‑monitoring measures. Drivers caught using such warnings in Germany face a €75 fine and a point on their licence. By contrast, radar warnings are permitted in Spain and the Netherlands, partially allowed in France, and subject to different restrictions in Romania. Google Maps reports accidents, speed controls and traffic disruptions in over 40 countries, though it does not publish a definitive list of where radar alerts are enabled.
