Google Maps adds speedometer to Android Auto without active navigation

Google is rolling out an update to Google Maps on Android Auto that allows the speedometer, speed limits, and traffic alerts—such as stop signs and traffic lights—to be displayed even when no active navigation route is set. Previously, these features were only visible once a user had programmed a specific destination.

This update aims to improve the driving experience for routine trips where users may not require step-by-step guidance but still benefit from real-time speed and safety information. The rollout is being conducted gradually, meaning not all users will receive the feature simultaneously.

Additionally, Google is addressing reports from some users regarding the sudden disappearance of the speedometer. While some users perceived this as a bug or a removal of the feature, reports indicate that the perceived disappearance was often due to the fact that the display was still tied to active navigation, or in some cases, a software glitch that the company is currently investigating.
