Google Maps and AICore apps can consume several gigabytes of Android phone storage

Google Maps stores offline maps and timeline data that can grow from hundreds of megabytes to several gigabytes, especially after the 2023 shift of timeline data from the cloud to the device. Users can free space by opening the Offline maps menu, deleting maps they no longer need, disabling automatic map updates, and clearing the app’s cache via Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Storage → Clear cache. The same cache‑clearing steps work on both Android and iPhone versions of the app.

AICore is a system‑level app on Android 14+ devices (most common on Google Pixel phones) that supports on‑device AI models such as Gemini Nano. It can occupy up to 7 GB of storage. Although it cannot be uninstalled, it can be disabled: Settings → Apps → AICore → Disable, then choose “Uninstall updates.” Disabling AICore frees the stored data but also turns off AI‑related features like Magic Cue, Magic Compose, Pixel Screenshots, and other Gemini‑powered functions, while the core Gemini service continues to run in the cloud.
