Google Maps faces navigation reliability concerns and hotel display bugs

Google Maps is facing scrutiny regarding the reliability of its walking navigation and a technical bug affecting hotel displays.

Regarding walking directions, the service utilizes a standardized walking speed that does not account for individual physical conditions, backpack weight, or terrain obstacles such as steep stairs, construction zones, or long traffic lights. Additionally, the effectiveness of the Live View augmented reality feature is heavily dependent on local Street View coverage, which remains inconsistent in rural areas, peripheral neighborhoods, and certain regions in Africa.

Separately, a software bug has been reported where the application fails to display red markers for available hotels and their prices during searches. Users have noted that while searches for other locations like restaurants function normally, hotel pins often disappear. Testing across Android, iOS, and web platforms has confirmed that the issue persists, with some reports indicating that the bug may be more prevalent on iPhone devices than on Android. Google has not yet issued an official statement or a timeline for a fix.
