Google Maps features: offline navigation and icon meanings
Google Maps offers various specialized features for navigation and location discovery, though certain functionalities are limited depending on connectivity and specific icons displayed on the interface.
When using offline maps, users maintain access to basic GPS positioning, step-by-step driving directions via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, and essential route filters such as avoiding tolls or highways. Users can also search for local services, including addresses, phone numbers, and operating hours within the downloaded area. However, offline mode disables real-time data, meaning users lose access to live traffic density, instant congestion alerts, and automatic rerouting. Estimated travel times in offline mode are based on standard free-flow traffic conditions rather than current reality.
The application also utilizes specific camera icons to convey information. A purple camera icon indicates points of interest or tourist attractions, providing details like accessibility and parking. An orange camera icon identifies the location of speed cameras along a route, though its visibility depends on local regulations. Additionally, a camera icon within the search bar provides access to the Lens feature within the app.
