Google Maps integrates Gemini AI to enable food ordering and conversational queries

Google is introducing significant updates to Google Maps by integrating Gemini-based artificial intelligence through a new feature called ‘Ask Maps’. This conversational tool allows users to ask complex, natural language questions to find specific locations or services, such as finding a place to charge a phone or locating an illuminated tennis court.

One of the most notable additions is the ability to order food directly within the Maps application. By utilizing AI, the service can find restaurants along a user's route and place orders for pickup or delivery through partners like Uber Eats. The system is designed to consider dietary preferences and saved locations to provide personalized recommendations.

Additionally, the update includes ‘Personal Intelligence’, which enables the navigation system to connect with other Google services like Gmail and Calendar to provide more contextual assistance. While these features are being rolled out to 150 territories, initial availability for certain functions, including food ordering, is focused on users in the United States.
