Google Maps introduces railway crossing warnings in Sweden

Google Maps has introduced a new feature in Sweden designed to warn drivers about railway crossings. Utilizing open data from Trafikverket, the application displays a warning icon on the map when a programmed route intersects with a railway crossing.

Sweden is the first European Union country to implement this specific solution. The feature is intended to supplement existing physical safety measures, such as barriers, lights, and signals, rather than replace them. Trafikverket officials noted that the digital warning serves as an additional layer of information to improve safety, particularly as approximately 2,900 of the country's 6,300 railway crossings lack active automated safeguards.
