Google Maps leverages smartphone data for real‑time traffic and adds user‑focused features

Google Maps determines congestion by anonymously aggregating location signals from users' smartphones. The service combines GPS, Wi‑Fi and cellular tower data to estimate vehicle speed and density on each road segment. When many devices are detected moving slowly, the app marks the road as congested. Researchers note that this passive tracking can be spoofed; artist Simon Weckert demonstrated that moving a handful of phones at low speed can falsely trigger a traffic jam on the map.

Beyond traffic, Google Maps offers several user‑oriented tools. Street View’s timeline lets users view historical imagery of a location, while Immersive View provides detailed, three‑dimensional previews of landmarks where available. A Layers option also displays real‑time air‑quality data, helping users plan outdoor activities. These features expand the app’s utility from simple navigation to broader situational awareness.
