Google Maps reports speedometer unit switching error

Users of Google Maps have reported a technical glitch where the speedometer unit unexpectedly switches between miles per hour (MPH) and kilometers per hour (KPH). The issue primarily affects the Android Auto interface, which displays the vehicle's current GPS-calculated speed alongside the road's speed limit.

Reports indicate that the unit changes occur regardless of the user's manual settings within the application. For instance, users in countries that utilize KPH have reported the app defaulting to MPH during navigation. While most reports focus on Android Auto, at least one user noted the discrepancy occurring within the mobile application as well.

There is currently no confirmed cause for the error. Some users suggested the issue might be triggered by driving near international borders where different measurement systems are used, though this theory does not account for all reported instances. No official workaround has been identified.
