Google Maps adds speedometer to Android Auto displays

Google has begun rolling out a new feature that shows the vehicle’s current speed on Android Auto’s infotainment screen. The speed is calculated via GPS and appears next to the posted speed limit, a capability that was previously missing on Android Auto despite being available on smartphones and on Apple CarPlay since 2024.

The feature is currently visible to a handful of users running Google Maps version 26.29.02.946673643 in the beta program, with reports coming from Canada, India and other regions. It is not enabled by default; users must open the Google Maps app on their phone, go to Settings → Navigation → Vehicle options and toggle the “Tachometer” switch. The rollout is controlled server‑side, so even devices with the latest app may not see it immediately.

Early feedback suggests the addition could improve driving safety and convenience by reducing the need to glance between the car’s analog speedometer and the navigation display.
