Google Maps combines real‑time speed data from users' smartphones with historical traffic patterns to predict congestion. The service relies on AI algorithms that analyze past and current information to estimate travel times, adjusting routes to avoid delays.

Beyond navigation, the app gathers extensive personal data, including name, email address, device details, search history, payment information and location history. These details may be merged with data from other Google services such as Search, Chrome, Gmail and YouTube. While users can disable certain features like Timeline or personalized recommendations, doing so reduces functionality, and complete data cessation is not possible as long as the app is used.
