Google Messages integrates C2PA standard to identify AI-edited media

Google has integrated the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard into its Google Messages app for Android. This update introduces Content Credentials, a feature designed to increase transparency regarding digital media by allowing users to view the origin and editing history of shared files.

The technology functions as a digital watermark, embedding encrypted metadata into images, videos, and audio files. This allows users to identify whether content has been generated or modified by artificial intelligence. By providing direct access to these credentials within the chat interface, the update aims to combat misinformation and deepfakes.

Currently, the rollout is limited to the Android mobile application and does not include the web version of the messenger. The effectiveness of the system relies on the preservation of metadata, which can sometimes be stripped by third-party applications or compression tools during sharing.
