Google updates Messages with new gestures and Gemini AI
Google is rolling out a series of significant updates to Google Messages and its Gemini AI integration. For the messaging platform, a major interface overhaul replaces the top toolbar with a floating menu that appears next to selected message bubbles when long-pressed. This new menu includes options to reply, forward, copy, star, delete, and view info, with additional functions like save and remix for images.
A key usability improvement is the introduction of selective text copying, allowing users to highlight and copy specific snippets—such as phone numbers or addresses—rather than the entire message. Additionally, gesture controls are being redesigned: swiping left on a conversation now reveals message timestamps and RCS encryption status, while swiping right on a specific message bubble enables a quick reply.
Separately, Google is expanding its Gemini AI capabilities. This includes the integration of Gemini directly into Google Messages, allowing users to invoke the assistant within chats for tasks like translations or summaries. Furthermore, Google is introducing visual avatars for Gemini Live agents, providing real-time lip-syncing and expressive digital personas to enhance interaction.
