Google must respond to Turkish privacy requests within 30 days

Faruk Bilir, President of the Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK), has addressed the visibility of outdated personal information on digital platforms and search engines. He noted that individuals often face discomfort when search results display information from 15 to 40 years ago, even when the original data was legally published.

Google has established a specific application portal for users in Turkey to request the removal of such information from its index. Under this process, Google is required to provide a response within 30 days, stating whether the requested information can or cannot be removed. If Google denies a request, individuals have the option to appeal to the KVKK for further evaluation.

Bilir emphasized that technology and privacy are not opposing concepts, highlighting that the rise of artificial intelligence necessitates an increased awareness of privacy rights.
