Google NotebookLM and Anthropic Claude AI tools spark consciousness and personalization debate

The tool can generate slide decks, infographics, podcasts and interactive Q&A, positioning itself as a personalized "second brain" for students, researchers and professionals.

Anthropic researchers claim that its Claude model contains an internal "global workspace" of representations that guide reasoning and output, drawing on the global workspace theory of consciousness. They argue this may indicate a step toward artificial consciousness, though they note key differences from human neural processes and that the theory remains contested among experts. The findings have reignited debate over whether large language models possess any form of consciousness.
