Google opens first office in Pakistan to boost digital economy

Google has officially opened its first office in Pakistan, located in Islamabad. The inauguration was led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by a Google delegation headed by Vice President Wilson L. White.

The expansion aims to support Pakistan’s goal of becoming a $30 billion IT export hub. Key initiatives include digital skills training, artificial intelligence development, and a local Chromebook assembly line intended for regional export. Google also announced that Pakistani students will receive one year of free access to its Gemini AI service.

Fasieh Mehta has been appointed as the first head of Google’s Pakistan mission. Additionally, Pakistani officials emphasized the need for digital platforms to address the country’s specific security circumstances, particularly regarding the use of social media to combat terrorism and ensure proactive monitoring of online content.
