Google ordered to halt data center work in Finland over environmental concerns
Finnish authorities have ordered Google to halt construction and land preparation for planned data centers in Muhos and Kajaani. The order from the Finnish Approval and Supervision Authority (LVV) follows reports that the company began extensive land clearing and tree felling before completing required environmental impact assessments (EIA).
Google’s subsidiary, Tuike Finland Oy, reportedly cleared approximately 330 hectares of forest in Muhos and nearly 200 hectares in Kajaani. The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation criticized the actions, suggesting they demonstrated either incompetence or a lack of respect for national legislation.
Google has acknowledged the error, stating that while they acted in good faith and believed their preparatory work complied with forestry laws, they have not met their own high standards. The company has committed to following the LVV’s instructions and halting work by October 23. While the company maintains it was in contact with various authorities, the lack of completed environmental assessments has led to the current work stoppage. The data center projects are part of a larger 13 billion euro investment in Finland.
