Google ordered to implement ad tech remedies by U.S. judge
U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema has issued a 106-page ruling imposing behavioral remedies on Google to address its illegal monopoly in the digital advertising technology market. While the judge rejected a proposal from the Department of Justice to force Google to divest its Ad Exchange (AdX), the decision mandates significant changes to how the company operates its ad tech ecosystem.
Key requirements include making Google's advertising solutions interoperable with competing technologies, increasing data sharing with publishers, and ending the practice of prioritizing its own services in ad auctions. Additionally, Google must appoint an internal antitrust compliance monitor to oversee these changes for a period of six years.
Google has stated it disagrees with the ruling regarding Google Ad Manager and intends to appeal. Industry observers, including Magnite CEO Michael Barrett, noted that the decision aims to create a more competitive and transparent auction environment for publishers and advertisers.
