Google pauses AI-generated image experiment in Search Overviews
Google has halted a recent experiment within its Search AI Overviews that involved displaying AI-generated images for recipe results. The test featured images that summarized the cooking process from preparation to completion.
Content creators, including the website Inspired Taste, criticized the experiment, arguing that AI-generated visuals attempt to replace human creators who invest significant time and resources into testing, photography, and filming. Critics also raised concerns regarding potential inaccuracies in AI-generated instructions and the risk of users mistakenly attributing AI illustrations to the cited recipe websites.
Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product, confirmed on X that the company is no longer running the small experiment. He clarified that this test is distinct from the Nano Banana feature announced in July, which is designed to trigger only when users explicitly request image generation.
