Google Pixel gains native LHDC v5 audio codec in Android 17

The Android 17 update for Google Pixel phones adds native support for the high‑resolution Bluetooth audio codec LHDC v5. The codec can transmit up to 24‑bit/192 kHz audio at rates of up to 1 Mbps, offering sound quality close to wired connections. Activation requires compatible LHDC‑v5 headphones and must be enabled through the developer options: after enabling developer mode, users select “Bluetooth audio codec” and choose LHDC v5. If the option is shaded or missing, the headphones are not compatible.

LHDC v5 provides higher bitrates than the default SBC or AAC codecs and complements the existing LDAC support, giving audiophiles a new wireless hi‑res option. The feature is currently limited to Google‑branded Pixel devices and is not enabled by default.

Users can verify the codec in the system settings and, when paired with supported headphones, can enjoy improved stability, reduced latency, and higher fidelity audio.
