Google Play Services adds WhatsApp backup to Android system settings

Google Play Services version 26.23 introduces a new option that lets users manage WhatsApp chat and media backups directly from the Android Settings menu. The update moves backup controls—such as selecting the Google account, backup frequency and Wi‑Fi‑only sync—out of the WhatsApp app and into a dedicated system‑level "Backup" or "Account" section, aiming to simplify data management for Android users.

The change does not alter the underlying backup functionality; it merely centralises the interface. Google says the rollout will be gradual over the coming weeks, reaching supported devices after the recent release of Android 17 and the accompanying Pixel hardware update. The update also includes routine bug fixes for the wider Android ecosystem.
