Google Play targeted by fraudulent apps and Early Access exploits

Cybercriminals are increasingly exploiting the Google Play Early Access program to distribute fraudulent applications. According to Bitdefender Labs, the SilkParasite campaign has been identified using this feature to bypass the public review and comment system, which prevents victims from warning others about scams.

These malicious actors use aggressive social media marketing on platforms like TikTok and Facebook, often employing AI-generated deepfakes of brand ambassadors. The fraudulent apps include fake digital slot machines, games promising cryptocurrency or PayPal rewards, and utility tools such as PDF readers and QR scanners. Bitdefender researchers have noted a connection to China regarding these activities.

In a related trend of deceptive software, several counterfeit apps masquerading as the official Huawei Health application have been identified in the Google Play Store. These fake apps use original Huawei icons to deceive users seeking software for wearables. Some of these fraudulent versions have achieved over 50,000 downloads, capitalizing on the difficulty users face in finding official Huawei software due to previous US sanctions.
