Google Play to enforce new Android app optimization standards in 2027
Google Play has announced new technical requirements for Android applications that will take effect in 2027. According to Raghavendra Hareesh Pottamsetty, the lead for developer and monetization at Google Play, the platform will begin evaluating specific performance metrics to determine app visibility and publishing eligibility.
Starting in February 2027, the Play Store will assess dynamic memory consumption, bitmap memory usage, and the level of DEX code optimization. Specifically, developers must ensure a minimum of 25 percent coverage through tools like R8 for DEX optimization. Apps that fail to meet these standards will face consequences including reduced visibility in search results and restricted publishing capabilities.
Additionally, a new requirement slated for April 2027 will mandate that apps automatically maintain user sessions following a device change, though games are currently exempt from this rule.
