Google ranking factors survey identifies relevance and backlinks as top signals

A survey of 131 search engine optimization (SEO) practitioners has identified relevance, backlinks, and content quality as the most significant factors influencing Google organic rankings. Published by Cyrus and Dawn Shepard through Zyppy Signal, the study analyzed 103 different signals. Search intent match was rated as the single strongest factor, while meta descriptions were ranked as having almost no impact on rankings.

In related search industry developments, Google's John Mueller noted that mapping traditional search positions, such as ranks one through ten, has become increasingly difficult for site owners. Additionally, Google Merchant Center has expanded its AI Performance Insights to include metrics for AI search intent, AI search terms, and AI attributes.
