Google released the stable version of Android 17 on June 16, 2026, initially for compatible Pixel devices, with a gradual rollout to other manufacturers expected in the following months.

The update introduces a significant shift in development strategy, replacing the traditional Developer Preview with a continuous Canary channel to accelerate feature experimentation and API access for developers.

Key enhancements focus on security and privacy. Android 17 implements stricter protections for SMS-based authentication codes (OTP) to prevent unauthorized apps from intercepting them. It also introduces the ACCESS_LOCAL_NETWORK permission to control app access to local network devices and adds support for Encrypted Client. Additionally, the system features improved transparency for location, camera, and microphone usage through new indicators.
