Google to replace Android Assistant with Gemini AI on Sept 4 2026
Google announced that it will discontinue the Google Assistant service on Android devices beginning on 4 September 2026. The shutdown will be rolled out over several weeks and will affect smartphones, tablets, Wear OS smartwatches, compatible headphones and earbuds, and Android Auto‑enabled cars. Users will be automatically migrated to Gemini, Google’s generative‑AI platform, and will no longer be able to revert to the former assistant.
Activation methods such as the “Hey Google” wake word or a long‑press of the power button will launch Gemini instead of the legacy assistant. Google communicated the change via email to affected users. The transition does not apply to devices that use Google built‑in in vehicles, nor to Google Home speakers, smart displays, or Google TV, which will retain the Assistant for the time being.
