Google resolves Search bug affecting website favicons

Google has addressed a technical bug that caused website favicons to disappear from Search results, replacing branded icons with a default grey globe. The issue, which surfaced between August 17 and 19, 2026, prompted concerns among SEO specialists regarding potential ranking penalties during a concurrent spam update. However, Google Search Engineering confirmed the issue was a visual rendering bug and not an SEO penalty, stating it does not affect search rankings or indexing.

In addition to the favicon issue, Google resolved a separate bug involving a two-day data gap in the Google Search Console crawl stats report. Both issues appear to be largely or fully resolved as of late August 2026. Experts advise website owners to maintain their current favicon implementations and avoid unnecessary changes while systems refresh.
