Google releases Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 with new security features

Google has released the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update for compatible Pixel devices, introducing significant security and customization features. A major addition is a native App Lock, allowing users to secure specific applications using a PIN or fingerprint. When activated, the system also hides notifications, widgets, and shortcuts associated with the locked app to prevent accidental data exposure.

To combat social engineering and fraud, the update implements new protections against unauthorized call forwarding. The system now blocks apps from executing USSD call-forwarding codes in the background via the TelephonyManager API and requires manual user confirmation through a system dialog when such codes are entered manually.

On the customization front, the update features a new Quick Settings layout editor, enabling users to rearrange toggles, the media player, and the brightness slider. Visual enhancements include expanded Gaussian blur effects on the lock screen and more granular color control through the Dynamic Color engine, which now includes a hue adjustment slider and four distinct color styles.
