Google rolls out Gemini AI upgrade for its smart speakers

Google is replacing the Google Assistant in its smart speakers with Gemini, its own generative AI model similar to ChatGPT. Gemini can answer questions, write text, code, analyze images and engage in more natural, conversational interactions, unlike the rule‑based Assistant that handled only short, precise commands.

The upgrade will be delivered gradually. When the update becomes available, users receive a notification on their phone and can configure Gemini, including voice settings, through the Google Home app. Customers can also join Google’s Public Preview program to receive the new AI before the general rollout by selecting the preview option in the app’s settings.

The change is being rolled out in markets such as Norway and Sweden, where the speakers are already in many homes, and it marks a shift toward more conversational AI capabilities in everyday devices.
