Google AI Overviews transform search and impact publisher traffic

The integration of AI Overviews into Google search is fundamentally altering the digital landscape for content creators and publishers. Data indicates that these AI-generated summaries are increasingly dominating the top of search results, leading to a significant decline in traditional click-through rates. For instance, when an AI summary is present, click rates for traditional results drop from 15% to 8%, while clicks on links within the AI summary itself account for only 1% of visits.

This shift is already impacting news organizations and publishers. Organic search traffic to more than 2,500 news sites fell by 33% between late 2024 and late 2025, with a 38% decline observed in the United States. Looking forward, publishers anticipate a further 43% drop in search engine traffic over the next three years.

In the United States, research shows that approximately 68% of Google searches in early 2026 ended without a click. As Google maintains a 90% share of the global search market, the rise of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is becoming a critical discipline for brands attempting to remain visible in an era where AI often provides direct answers, reducing the need for users to visit external websites.
