Google secures clean energy via geothermal and nuclear projects

Tech giants are increasingly turning to advanced clean energy solutions to power the massive electricity demands of their data centers. Google has entered into agreements to secure constant, carbon-free power through both geothermal and nuclear technologies in the United States.

In Utah, Google will purchase 396 MW from Fervo Energy’s Cape Station plant, a capacity sufficient to power approximately 430,000 homes. Unlike solar or wind, geothermal energy provides a steady, 24-hour supply of electricity, making it an ideal candidate for the continuous computing needs of large-scale data centers.

Simultaneously, Kairos Power is advancing nuclear technology to meet similar needs. The company is testing specialized shielding and remote maintenance systems for its Hermes 2 molten salt reactor. This facility is intended to provide up to 50 MW to the grid by 2030 to support Google’s operations. Testing is currently underway at the Engineering Test Unit 3 (ETU 3) in Tennessee to refine construction and operational safety before the introduction of uranium.
