Google Sheets receives updates for Excel imports and data analysis

Google is rolling out significant updates to Google Sheets aimed at improving compatibility with Microsoft Excel and enhancing data analysis capabilities. The new updates allow Excel tables to convert directly into native Google Sheets tables, preserving original formatting, sort controls, and structural benefits. Additionally, linked pivot tables from Excel files will now import as dynamic, interactive elements rather than static data snapshots.

For enterprise users, Google is also introducing usability upgrades to Connected Sheets. These improvements, specifically designed for those querying BigQuery databases, include features such as list parameters and column aliasing to streamline the analysis of massive datasets.

Separately, technical explorations have highlighted the potential for integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Google Sheets. By utilizing the Google Sheets API, users can potentially leverage natural language commands to perform complex data analysis tasks, such as querying specific revenue figures or sales trends directly through a conversational interface.
